Did you call the bearing houses (several in any big city) with the number off the bearing? Going by application can get pricey as you end up going to specialty suppliers, but bearings have been made in standard sizes by number pretty much forever. If you can't read the number, give them the dimensions. I'd be amazed if your steering box bearing was truly not made any more. I've worked on some pretty old and obscure stuff and never had a problem finding tapered roller bearings. Often the ball bearing assemblies don't have a direct replacement, but by substituting a sealed unit for an original unsealed one, or using a bushing in the bore if new ones aren't available with a small enough ID for the needed OD, or by using one that's a little thinner than the original, a functional substitute can be found. If substituting a sealed for an unsealed one, and it's going in a gear box full of oil, I'll tear the seal out of the new one. Otherwise, I'll consider it an upgrade. But like I said, I've never found a Timken type bearing that wasn't still available.
