The distribution tube is important for even cooling, otherwise not enough water circulates in the back of the block, as I understand it. It basically has an outlet directing cool water at each cylinder. I have a vague recollection that someone is selling a stainless steel version that solves the rust-out problem. Of course you might not care if it rusts out 50 years from now.

As for glass, any good glass shop can cut you a circle of single-strength window glass, which is all it is. If you have a steady hand, you can do it yourself. Trace the circle on the glass with a pen, and then follow it freehand carefully with a glass cutter. I find I have to put my old eyes pretty close to it to see it, which means little fragments of glass "spray" up from the cutter, which means safety glasses are important. Once you've scribed it all the way around, ideally in one continual cut, turn the glass over on a smooth hard surface with a thin cloth between the glass and the table. The back end of your glass cutter, if it's the cast iron kind, has a ball on it about 1/2" in diameter. This is what the ball is for. Tap the glass directly above the scribed line, starting gently, and increasing until you get a little crack that should follow the scribed mark. Now lead the crack around the circle by tapping over the scribed line just ahead of the crack until you're all the way around. If you have a friend who does stained glass art, get them to do it for you because they're used to this technique, and doing it on single-strength window glass is trivial compared to thick wavy art glass.
