I use a second 'reciever' pressed into the tank, to take a second lock ring system. The a stainless line through the 'cap' part. Sealed with a Buna o-ring and the factory lock ring. Plus I use a filter sock, off eBay, about $10 plus shipping. That is the point of the lock ring system, accesss to service the sock.

I've since 'improved' it to make a surer build. I use a piece of 1/2 rod, drilled to accept the tube. Then another hole on the outside at right angles. Tig weld the tubes into the "right angle coupling", then weld the coupling into the 'cap'. Three welds instead of one, but each is a sure thing, where as the tube-through-cap was a tough weld to get to.

You asked how I do it, that's it.

Here's what I would do fur the repair you are doing: No sock, because you don't have the access. So, I would use some 1/2" rod or a piece of a bolt make to make a 'coupling' to suit the pick up line (hey baby, want to get lucky? ;)) on one end, and 1/8 pipe female on the other. Braze the tube in. Drill about a 1/4" hole in your patch. Place hole over a 9/16" socket, and hammer a center punch into the hole. That will make a nice flared 'dimple', easy to braze the coupling in to. I hope you have a huge center punch? Stop when hole is big enough to hammer the coupling in snugly. that is the way I do my 'cap', and also the diesel return line.

Hmmm, instead of braze, solder maybe? Especially if you find a brass fitting to do what needs to be done.
