If the trans temp shows halfway hot even when you know it is stone cold, as in first thing in the morning when you turn the key, then something is wrong with the gauge or sender. Since it worked when you took it in, my guess is they knocked the wire loose from the sender. Perhaps there's more to it than that (maybe busted the sender somehow, overtorquing it or whatever), but it's something along those lines.
