Ammeter problem?

Since I converted my B4 ffpw to 12 volts the ammeter appears all but useless. I wiggles a little when I turn on the key but thats it. Was there something I neglected to do when I went over from 6 volt? how should the wires go. I'm not even sure I have it wired correctly. I was told a voltmeter is more usefull. Any comments on ammeters appreciated
