Honestly, I am two, maybe three steps above your average shade-tree mechanic. I'm not afraid to do something previously not encountered, as long as I have manuals and parts diagrams. I am in the process of rebuilding the knuckles. PO's had regretfully neglected maintenance and repair. All steering linkages are disconnected. After careful shimming, I was able to get to the required preload-torque value for turning the knuckle on the passenger side. Re-assembly progressed to the point where I was installing the brake backing plate over the outer drive shaft housing. I observed that as I was tightening the bolts, the turning radius was going away. I disassembled the parts and checked the inner drive shaft to make sure it was fully seated. I reassembled the knuckle itself, careful to ensure that all four pieces meshed properly. All for nought. I had kept all the parts for that side together, apart from the other side. No mixing of parts has occurred to my knowledge.
