The key to your situation is to clean slow. I would clean the pan spotless and leave everything else alone unless theres serious crust that could be taken off without disturbing things a whole lot. They key is to clean slow with a detergent oil. You start power washing and so forth I would be affraid you will get a piece of crud somewhere and run the risk of plugging a oil passage. run it and drive it and plan on changing the oil on short intervals and it will clean itself out.

I have been a big fan of valvoline and have used it for years. Have seen valvoline keep a new v8 motor completely clean after many years of use. Have seen it clean a motor out. Changing it every week for 5-6 weeks straight. But with the old flathead I seem to be having better luck with Castrol cleaning things. Valvoline in the flathead will still look almost like new oil after a few months of use while the castrol will start to blacken up.
