Does it stick to a magnet? It's probably crankshaft, ring, and cylinder powder. If it doesn't stick to a magnet, it's probably rod and main bearing and piston powder. There will always be a small amount of it because that's where the metal goes when the engine wears, at least the amount that doesn't get caught in the filter. I don't know what's a "normal" amount. So long as its a very fine flour, and you're pretty sure the whole engine is getting well lubed with good oil, I wouldn't worry about it, but if there are any larger particles, shavings, etc, something is eating itself up fast. Same with gearbox oil. There's always some dust (more like very fine flakes due to how ball and roller bearings wear) but when you find half a roller, or flakes that look like confetti, you're in trouble.
