I mix the the linseed and mineral spirits 50 50 then brush it on. Then I simply clean the brush. No fire issue here. The bed wood in my truck is quite rough so wiping it on is not an option. Besides the wood was so dry it soaked up so much of it.
Being in the NW you might have see Olympic stains. Apparently it is linseed oil, mineral spirits and a little color. Too bad I did not know that earlier. A gallon of clear Olympic stain is much cheaper than mixing a quart of linseed oil and a quart of mineral spirits.
