Is when I took ownership of the first one. But getting to know the trucks was around 8-9 years old. aroun d 73-74, something like that. Went past the Forest Fire Service shop every day after school, befriended the staff there and was allowed to turn a wrench here and there. (learned how to change a head gasket really fast. Now, on this day next week, I will work my last day as I am retiring from the job. Those guys in thar shop really looked out for me as a kid, and through my career. Some of them are still around today, and it will be quite an experience seeing them at my retirement party! I still go to them when I get jammed up on something on one of the trucks, they love it! Those mechanics kind of remind me of Chrysler's Ram Chargers....they where always taking apart something new and making it work beyond belief. The best was the HEMI's that would go into the W300's and 500's. (not the 426, but the 331's and earlier versions. Those trucks where un-stoppable! (and LOUD). But, like anyhting else, regulation came into play and all the fun had to stop. (plus a shortage of donated engines)I am always on the look out for one of them, but haven't found one yet. Most are probably long gone. Besides, there wasn't much left of them when we retired them from service. I am going to see if I have some pictures somewhere, it is interesting.
