OK the Book states the maximum wear tolerance is .007
I installed the new front axles in August of 2009.
There seemed to be more play now than when new, and I while doing the post Iowa inspections I found some water behind the right drive flange (wonder how that could of got there). So I pulled the front apart and the axles out.
There was lots/plenty of grease and a little water in the tracta joint housings.
On the Right Axle the inner to ball is .010, the ball to ball is .006, and the outer to ball is .008
On the Left the measurements are in the .006 to .007 range.
Surfaces look good except for a little rust from the water in a couple of spots.
So now what (and no the answer is not Rockwells)?
Am I measuring something wrong? I slide the assembled axle joint so all the play is on one side and insert the feeler gauge. I did not measure the NOS axles before I installed them, they were still factory packed in cosmoline, and I assumed still a complete 4 pc matched set.
Ideas?
Will
