After it has been allowed to soak with penetrant in the cylinders, jack up one rear wheel, put the transmission in fourth gear, and rotate the rear wheel back and forth through the lash in the drive train.

If it is likely to move, you can move it that way. The mass of the rear wheel puts some force into it. That is far easier than trying to rotate the engine itself by turning a socket on a crank nut or working at a flywheel tooth with a bar.
