Not sure why the exact amount of oil should make much difference. Once you have enough to thoroughly soak and seal the rings, what difference does even more oil make, unless you added so much that it filled up a goodly part of the combustion chamber and raised the compression ratio (or caused hydrostatic lock). I think a wet/dry test is a good way to reassure yourself that it's probably a valve problem and all you need to do is pull the head, rather then dig into major bottom-end work.

Alternatively, do a leak-down test, or to put it less fancy, rig up a way to hook compressed air into the spark plug hole, see that the piston is at TDC on a the compression stroke, and listen for air hissing out and/or feel if it's blowing out the exhaust pipe, the carburetor, the crankcase breather, or the radiator. With enough air, it will be pretty obvious where it's coming out.
