Of course, you would have to twist left axles in opposite direction than rights. But twistin while hot would pre-align the grains in the direction they would need to be to withstand the torque. Even just a few inches on the spline end, sine that is the location of the stress riser involved.

And YES, steel has grain to it. Big deal in springs. And plow disks, which are rolled by turning 90° between each pass of through the rolls. Makes the grains flat and omni-directional. Much less prone to cracking.
