For years, my wife and I would enjoy the Spoon River Drive here in Illinois. The event encompasses a group of small towns in rural Fulton County, all situated along the Spoon River. They come together each fall and host craft shows, antique flea markets, antique tractor shows, and all kinds of good homemade things to eat over a two-weekend period.

For several years we had been parking outside of this one small town along the dead end road leading to the old abandoned river bridge. There was room for probably 50 cars along each side of the road, and from there it was a short walk across the old bridge into town. The property that the old road was on was owned by the state and only used by the local farmers to get to the fields closest to the river and the folks who wanted to swim and fish in the river.

On one of the drives, there was a man and woman standing half way down the road, about at the point where the cars were parked to. He wore a change machine on his belt and she held a sign that said “Parking - $5.00”. I just smiled and waved as we drove past, found a spot to park near the river, and walked into town. On the way back out, the couple had moved up the old road to the intersection where it met with the newer road that wound its way across the newer bridge into town. I smiled and waved again but they would not even look at me.

They did not come back the following year and we have not seen them since.
