I had a 318/np-435 in my Power Wagon. To get to my home, I have to climb a mountain road with twists and turns. The 318 would move my truck up the mountain, roughly 5 miles of constant climbing in 4th gear with power to spare. My fuel use was about 10 mpg and top speed was roughly 60 with the engine wound out.

Enter the Cummins Diesel;
The Power Wagon, as well as my M37, Carryall and W300 have Cummins B3.9's driving into NV-4500 transmission, driving into 4.89 differentials. I still climb the mountain in 4th gear, with power to spare. I can run any legal highway speed and get roughly 30 mpg.

I forget how many R's the 318 had to turn to develop its full torque. The Cummins develop full torque roughly 400 R's off idle. Off road, my trucks are like a bull dozer, they just go slow and over everything, no spinning wheels jumping off rocks.

I used to consul people thinking diesel conversion to budget $8500.00. And thats if you can do everything your self. Lots of Fab work has to be done. Nothing is available off shelf to drop a B3.9 in our Dodges. Those days are past. Based on my last swap, my W300 Power Giant, I can easily suggest a budget of $10,000.00. This includes Power Steering and disk brakes, both of which are needed.

Its a big job and expensive job, but the rewards are great. The trucks in the picture are all Powered by Cummins B3.9's, all work done in my shop.

Paul
