a centered rear diff has several advantages
1 decreased drive shaft angle (if used with a rear centered transfer case output (saves universal joints)
2 decreased gear noise/improved power transmission-- rear drive shaft power goes straight through transfer case and not through gears
3 enables axle shafts to be of same length- so 1 spare can be carried to service both sides

in my 3/4 ton command car i have-- mercedes in europe did the modificaton-- a rear centered diff(that is stock)--but they installed a m-37 rear third member. i have the added strenght of a m-37 r&p and the advantages above. in addition, the single speed transfer case transmits power straight through the case. my m37 and my command car have 4.89s but the command car is faster and smoother. (both engines are rebuilt)

just my thoughts
