One way to get around the black page is to set the options in your browser so that the pages appear with your settings, overriding the page settings.
In Netscape Edit | Preferences | Appearance | Colors | Check the box in the section that says "Sometimes a page will display its own colors and background" Always use my colors, overriding document
Then, as long as your colors are white backgound with black text, it will change the page and you can print it.
In IE 5
Go To Tools | Internet Options | General Tab | Accessability | Check the box that says "Ignore colors specified on web page"
