misunderstanding. You keep saying max. HP at 3200 rpm but my 64'WM300 doorpost says 3600rpm.The late model 251 in WM300s have full pressure, full flow oiling and filtering, not splash type like the 230.Turbo-charging is not a new idea,it was originally designed for the L-head because of the low compression design.I have a book with pictures of a L-head in-line 6 with a belt driven supercharger(impeller style)dated 1950.If a supercharger is not too much for a L-head I'm sure a turbo would not be a problem. Each application has its own specs for the given cu.in. and compression of that engine,so if one does the math, the unit should match the application and be within operating and safety range.
I agree with you that if someone has gotten the idea a diesel is the way to go,he should have adequite info to make a wise decission.I also feel that this info should be enough by which to compare the merits or short comings of both the original or prospective replacement engines.
Most people have mindsets of some sort, about what they percieve to be a better course of action. This mindset is the result of the volume and quality of info recieved.
My intention is to give those who have been influenced by selective info and opinions a more rounded scope of possibilities for keeping and upgrading the 251 L-head not the weak 230 L-head and hopefully promote ideas and experimentation so as to give reason to keep and upgrade the 251 with new or old methods by PW owners.
The 251 rebuilt with modern methods and quality parts upgraded with optical ignition conversion unit($95+-),intake-carb or fuel injection, headers w/turbo-charging,elect.water,fuel,cooling fan, properly maintained and operated should last long and increase net HP by as much as 50-75+ hp.If I was financially able these ideas would already be in operation and testing but I can do the math and research and they say,to quote Buckwheat"The 251 engine is O'TA'"!!!
