Yes, both propane and alcohol have a lower energy content, in BTU/gal, than gasoline. Using them in an unmodified gas engine will result in reduced performance. To take advantage of either of those alternative fuels, you need to raise the compression ratio considerably and then run it strictly on propane or alcohol. Otherwise, it's like converting a coal-fired steam engine to run on gasoline, by putting a gas burner underneath the boiler -- yes it will work, but it's not very efficient.
