Check all of you connections. I had the same issue. The combination of a weak battery and corrosion on the connections did it for me. If I ran a wire from the batter straight to the coil it started fine. (Do not do this with your electronic ignition). I just needed to clean up the ignition circuit. Use a volt meter and see what you voltage is at different places in the truck. It should be close to 6 Volts most everywhere with the ignition in the on position. If you have been cranking a lot your battery will be down. Starting much better with the battery charger tells me that you either have a bad battery even if it is new. Also consider the fact that you are hooking up the charger to the wires and not the battery it self tells me that the connection between the leads and the battery need to be cleaned. Also you battery cable with 6 Volts must be much larger than you would use with a 12 Volt setup. Make sure that you have the correct size cable. I us O wires if I am correct. Also check the ground strap at the engine block.
