The WWII MB/GPW series Jeeps had the pioneer tool indents on the driver's side and had a full floating rear axle. This vehicle has both of those cues, so my guess is it started out life as a WWII Jeep and someone has done some creative metalwork since then. I think it looks rather interesting and is worth fixing up in it's current configuration for it's own sake. There is a long history of Jeeps being modified by their owners to suit their own purposes and this looks like a great example of that.
