As the valve is starting to leak, it allows hot gas in and around the stem area, this hot gas heats up the guide area and the heat transfer cooks the oil. Over a period of time as the valve further degrades this coking effect continues as long as the cylinder keeps firing.
Timing sets often found on ebay for as little as $25 for chain and 2 gears. This one at $69 on Oz ebay now a bit dearer. Item number: 280500554173
The outer part of the damper will often start to slip a little in time - how much is anyone's guess - and this screws your timing mark.
You will have to pull the head and fix the valve problem, also you may have a sick lifter on that cylinder.
