Get TDC on #1 and see if anything lines up on the damper, if no, put a mark there that lines up with something and mark that as well, set timing between 7 and 10 (about 1/2" to 5/8"). Check vacuum at carb nipple when throttle is partly open, if memory serves these have the vac port above the butterfly.
Probably replace PCV and also check for vac leak where manifold bolts to head.
Carb backfire possible from - timing too advanced - vac leak - not enough accelerator pump gas.
