6 cylinder engine - oil filter connection

I'm rebuilding an in-line 6 cylinder engine that i did not disassemble. There is a canister filter holder on the left side of the engine and I'm not sure where the tubes are supposed to connect on the engine. There appears to be a diamond shaped mounting space just below this canister where I believe a different type of oil filter can be attached. Whatever was supposed to bolt on here, I don't have and can't find in the parts manual. Can somebody tell me how to hook up this oil filter and/or what is supposed to be attached to the engine? I can send a picture if needed.
