If I remember correctly diesel is one of the fist products cracked from crude in the refining process. Gas is further down the line taking more effort to refine it.
In the late 1800's they were after the kerosene for lamps and etc. Gas was a waste product of the refining process and was dumped into creeks, rivers and onto the land. Many creeks and rivers caught fire due to spills and dumping back then. Boy I bet some areas around Cleveland, New York and Pennsylvania are still messed up from that
