The biggest issue on converting an older engine to synthetic is that the better detergents and increased resistance to breakdown mean that the oil is better about removing contaminates from inside the engine.

On an older engine this can mean cleaning out all the sludge deposits that are clogging up small holes and imperfections in the gasket sealing surfaces. Then the improved flow characteristics will allow the oil to more easily flow through those imperfections.

On a particularly old engine that could have larger amounts of deposits inside the engine the cleaning action has the possibility to remove larger chunks of debris that can then be carried through the engine or clog the pump inlet screen.

There's no reason you can't convert as long as you've been properly changing the oil with a quality detergent type conventional oil. I wouldn't expect the second scenario very likely unless the engine was not properly cared for or you were using non-detergent oil for a long time.

You could see some minor oil leaks start over time, but that just means you don't have a good seal at that joint and that the oil is doing it's job of keeping the engine clean.
