This is not a flathead experience, but it may still be relevant. I have Chrysler GTC (5 speed) 3 liter V6 with 150K miles. It did a use a little oil and leaked a bit from the head gasket. I decided to make it into my "hypermiler" so I put 40psi in the tires, changed to Mobil 1 etc. I could get an honest 35mpg at 65mph. But It started leaking very soon and badly, about 100 mile per quart. Leaked from everywhere and changing the head gasked made only a minor improvement. Went back to conventional oil and the leaks have slowed, now to about 500 miles/quart.

I think I recommend not doing it on an old engine, but others have done it successfully.
