Depends on the year. Some use one wire to each brush, some ground one brush, use one wire to the other brush. Depends on whether three at an electronic regulator, or only two, like the old little cube. Can you see a flat 'bayonet' lug at each brush to plug a wire onto? The rebuilder would have used the appropriate brush. Two lugs means yellow to one, black to other. One lugs means yellow to one, black to an external screw some where on the body of the alt.

Either way, you also need to make sure the regulator has a good ground. Either a separate wire or put a star washer under a mounting ear.

For lurkers, too late for Chris, worn brushes are the most common prob. They can be changed from outside, maybe even while mounted. A small screw through the plastic brush holder, where the wire plugs on. Remove plastic brush holder, stick new brush in, replace holder. One side may be grounded, via a screw hole in the metal tab, or both insulated and get wires plugged on.

Hope I helped, not just confused the issue as well as the audience.
