When I was growing up my dad had a radiator shop as a side line. We had one of those flush guns and it would blast a lot of crud out. We did boil the radiators first most times but we were wary of the acid bath eating the copper. I don't think your guy was steering you wrong on that part of it. In extreme cases my dad would remove the tank and rod the core. A slow tedious process. We never had a PW radiator with that style tank so I don't know the trick to it. In removing a tank he would heat with a torch and blow the solder with a compressed air gun.
