Ron, It is called arc blow. Remember the little experiments with magnets and iron
filings so you could see the magnetic field?
Moulten steel is non magnetic but is afected by the field as it cools and is displaced by the feild.
Arc blow is real apparent while welding on the ends of high carbon steel that has picked up some magnitism.
Try tack welding your plug to a rod for a handle to hold it in place.
