You can do it that way by taking direct measurements with a protractor square and eliminate the trial cut and error method.

Use the protrator square to measure the angle of the intersection of the jack rafter to the valley rafter for the first angle, and then lay the protractor square on the valley rafter having it point verticle to the ground for the second angle.
