I just went and looked at my own. The pitman arm ball is about 1 1/2" from the end. The steering arm ball is much closer to the end of the drag link.
Each end uses the same small parts, but the frontest end gets the spring and plunger in first, before the two socket halves. The rear end gets the socket halfs in first, then the spring and plunger.
It's not intuitive, because several posters here have asked.
I'm not sure if they even can go together wrong, but if they do, that would make about 1/2" length difference, just about right to
make 3/8 ths of a turn improvement.
