Leaf spring lubrication

The other day someone mentioned lubing the leaf springs to improve the ride which sounds logical to me.. About 2 months ago I had a question about my M-37 springs and in talking to a spring shop in Seattle, that I first dealt with about 30 yrs ago, I mentioned that I might disassemble the spring packs, clean them up, lube them and reassemble. He said not to lube them as it caused the springs to lose their temper.
Has anyone else ever heard that?
In looking at other springs that he had just rebuilt for other customers, none of them had any lube.
