No key in them any more either. It's push button start with the key fob providing the electronic "code" the computer needs to recognize a valid button push.
I heard that he was able to shut the car off and drift to the side of the road. Most of the push-button systems will shut the car off while in gear if you hold the button down for a few seconds or push a certain number of times.
