It may be more complicated than the obvious? Some vehicles have fly-by-wire elctronics that if defective do not operate as designed. Alot like pressing the TV Remote and the TV not responding? No direct mechanical connection between the operator and the system. Many do not have a traditional "key". Rather one inserts the fob into the slot or simply carries it in their pocket/purse and presses the "start/stop" button. When the engine runs away they are simply pressing a non-functioning button! Similar for the auto tranny, electrically controlled. Ad a little PANIC and things can go bad quickly. However dailing 911 seems abit optimistic when other lives are at stake. At some point I feel the "glitch" will be discovered, but maybe not revealed.
Defective Floor mats? What an embarrassing response from Toyota!
