Jerry, your USA 6x6 w500 wheels are bolt togethers, the wheel everybody is aware of being banned and non DOT are the real SPLIT WHeel, not a split ring wheel, there are no banned split ring wheels that I have ever heard of.

A split wheel is exactly that, the wheel is split from one side of the bead to the opp side. All split wheels used a flap and intertubes due to the split in the wheel not holding air for tubeless operation. Also the split wheels do not use a lock ring to retain the tire on the wheel. The split in the wheel from side to side is pryed with a tire tool made for a split wheel. I have a 1955 Hobbs trailer with 11x22 split wheels, they are easy to change and faster than changing a lock ring wheel. Most almost everybody has gotten split wheels mixed up with lock ring wheels and thus is scared of them. Lock rings are great easy to change inventions. I always have taken Mike Stones advice about how to change them by the book and even further. I always have a rule that I insist that the wheel be hit with a wire wheel and buff out all of the rust and dirt where they lock ring will seat. I also toss away any lock ring that is sprung or damaged where it seats. I think sprung lock rings are the most dangerous thing about any wheels. Most people think they are susposed to be sprung!! Not so, if you read the articles Mike Stone has posted you will see that they should be replaced with new ones. New lock rings are easily availble if you go to a HD tire Store or Wheel Supplier with the correct wheel info, certain wheels require matching lock rings. But the correct Ken Tool for lock ring removal and you will not have damaged lock rings, hard to find but might save your life or somebody else's.
