1922 white pine (bragg load) old tymers in these parts cut the forests and had ice roads > they said going down the hills they had a cable attached to the sled the cable went to a "brake" a series of drums operated by a brakeman " there is a proper name but i forget > and let the sled decend slowly > on the up hill side the ice road was constantly watered in the sled tracks so there would be less friction and where the horses walked ashes fron the stove for traction . horse shoes would be corked .large cleats in the shoes I was at a old camp many years ago i would be scared to drive the roads in a truck much less with team and wagon full of that pine > funny thing what the loggers would say what would make or break the camp was the COOK ! ~Copey
