Yeah the cover is stuck on the end of the shaft. I was prying with 2 crowbars, and I really don't want to break the cover. I managed to move it a 1/4" off of the bushing. When it is pushed back on the bushing, the cover will turn. If you pry it up, the cover binds on the bushing and will not turn.

If you look at the picture, yes I am trying to push the drum shaft with the bull gear attached out through the cover opening. The bull gear in my opinion is shot, all of the teeth are worn really bad on one side. Interestingly the worm looks great, I think someone tore the winch down and replaced the worm.

As far as the shaft is concerned, it may need to be replaced as well. After pulling off the drum there was alot of water trapped in the grease cavity. It had mixed with the grease inside the drum, a real mess. I had to use a really big 3 jaw gear puller to remove the drum, and then the sliding clutch. I have tried checking for out of round or warping of the shaft, I am not entirely convinced that the shaft is straight, which maybe part of the reason why the drum and clutch were so difficult to pull off.

Whoever used the winch last managed to get it into such a bind that they broke the drum, and brazed a 1/2" thick plate of steel that was cut and ground to mimick the shape of the broken drum side. They even had to braze the inside of the drum. I have more pictures, but I have been really busy last week with work and honey do lists all this weekend to post the rest of the pictures to my link... you know how that goes.

So I will try beating the shaft back into the gear housing, sand the hell out of the shaft, lube it up and give it a try...
