I just don't see how any stress that could be applied to that shaft would cause it to crack like that. Also the crack looks rather wide and short for a stress fracture. Usually you have to look really closely to see cracks in castings. He didn't say anything about the tranny filling up with water and freezing, like happened to mine, but if it did, I would expect the crack to form at the weakest point. Mine cracked between the drain hole and the passenger-side PTO hole. This crack goes right across the thick part around the shaft hole and then stops. That makes no sense from the point of view of being overstressed in service, but it makes perfect sense in the foundry, as the thick part is hotter and therefore weaker as it shrinks, while the thinner part has cooled off enough at that point to stop the crack from propagating into it very far. All of this is more reason why I think it's not a crack that needs a structural repair. The only reason to even repair it with epoxy is to keep it from leaking oil. If you're going to epoxy it, it'd still be good to drill out the end of the crack just to help it not propagate, but after all these years, I think the metal has probably settled down and doesn't have any severe stresses left in it.
