To answer your question, back in the 60s when we still had real horsepower ratings, many Pittman line trucks left the factory with a 7.5kw Onan generator that had a hydraulic pump coupled to it for boom operation. The Onan rated at about 18 ponies.

The problem is speed of movement.

Later knuckle booms often were built with a pony motor that operated the boom all day rather than run the truck. 20 plus horsepower was pretty common. Some were set up to start & stop the pony from the bucket. Shortly after that idea came the invention of the repelling strap mounted tot he upper boom in a canvas bag right after somebody figured out the pony doesn't always start from the bucket.

You also need to consider the requirements of pilot valves on the boom itself. Your aux pump will need to be large enough to open them.
