Nothing between it and the tank except 5' of 3/4" hose, the filter body, and a pipe elbow. There used to be a filter on the return inside the tank, but it's gone. The WIX tech data says the filter is rated for up to 350 psi, which is a lot more than there should ever be in that situation. I attributed the first blow-out to a rusty filter can due to all the water in the system. The problem had to be a deteriorated hose. I just can't see inside it under operating conditions. The outside was significantly deteriorated and cracked, so the inside might be just as bad. I hope that was the problem.
