Robert, if it is just the skirt, no on the first question. if you pull the wires one at a time & replace at idle, when you get to the one that is cracked it will stop knocking. wrist pin will make a simular noise and will also stop when the wire is pulled, as will a rod, but a rod is deep down in the engine. a main will make a light knock at a fast idle that is also down deep in the engine w/no wires off. hope this helps some.
