When my youngest daughter wanted to buy her first car, she wanted a Passat real bad. We went to Spokane, Wheel Deals in hand, and called on the private parties with Passats for sale. I can't believe how many people answered who only know enough English to get their son or daughter who could speak English on the phone. This person would proceed to tell some story about how they were selling their Passat to get the money to go to college. Most of these cars had been bought from insurance companies as totals and had been rebuilt. Some were actually done pretty well. Maybe they were able to loosen up your engine enough to get it on the road and re-sell it. The tip off is that the title has to disclose the true facts on the car's history, if it comes from an insurance co.
