I remember back in the '70s there was some outfit selling a teflon oil additive. To prove how good it was, they'd take a well broken in V8, run it on the teflon oil for some number of miles, and then drain all the oil out of it and keep running it without any oil. Then they'd advertise that after XXXX miles with no oil, it was still running just because of the excellent properties of the teflon film left in it by their special oil. No doubt, after XXXX+1 miles, it seized up, so that's why they claimed only that it was till running at XXXX miles. What was more interesting was that when some independent outfit did a comparative test, they found that any well broken in engine would run an amazingly long time after the oil was drained out of it, with or without the teflon additive.

What was true for a 1970s vintage American V8 was not true for my 1986 1600 cc Honda, though. After pulling the engine and having the head done at 220,000 miles, I forgot to hook up the oil pressure idiot light and it ran out of oil and seized up shortly thereafter. Interestingly it was cam shaft that seized, not the crank or pistons. The cam on that engine runs directly in the aluminum head for its journals with no separate bearing inserts. I thought about finding another head for it, but with that kind of mileage on it and not knowing the condition of the bottom end, I was glad to sell the car for $350 to some Russians.
