as I am curious as to any further comment you may have on this. According to this ole dealer(not a real dealer, kind of an agent who would call on the oilfield people and sell em dodge trucks. He said they did that(in the oilfield) so the short axle would break first and if it did break it would break at the flange not the diff. and therefore be a quick fix.
He also said the flat fenders were cheaper than bigger trucks so a lot of times they would stack overloads springs sky high, reinforce the frame and run duals. I bought a parts truck that had duals and the frame was reinforced. I had the rear drums off and the spindle was cracked. I vaguely remember him say they would make 6x6s by reinforcing the frame and take a spare rear axle and flip it for the third axle or maybe I dreamt that.
