V8s took a long time to take over in trucks. dodge started offering V8s in 2 wheel drives in 54 or so. automatics too. and for a couple years mid fifties manual with overdrive! but even six years later by far the most common engine in a Dodge light duty truck was a flat head 6. Flatheads were available in the civilian trucks thru 62 or so.
