If the rest spark, Swap plug wire, swap spark plug. One at a time.
If the whole system is bad, check the primary wire coil-to-points. Check that the points do open and close. Close all the way? Condenser lead not grounded? Through-the-dist-wall fitting not grounded?
You temporary hook up sounds reasonable. Coil terminals are marked +, -. Should be hooked up appropriate to battery, negative ground battery means + on coil to + battery.
