Dad has never made a big deal of his heroism.
His half-brother/cousin was a marine though. Uncle Bruno was a USMC machine gunner on Eniwetoc. Navy Cross for taking his machine gun in where the tanks wouldn't go. Purple heart for a bullet in the chest, too close to the heart to remove. Later on Iwo Jima, got hit by a mortar round that didn't explode. Next round wiped out his buddies while Bruno was knocked cold. He was evaced to Saipan. Dad visited him in the hospital there on a 3 day pass from Tinian.
Anyway, I think Dad feels his heroism is insignificant compared to Bruno's. Just in the last year did I hear the stories. I got curious when I found the bent up bomb truck pic in the trash can. Hadn't seen it since I was six. When I asked Dad what happened to that truck, he said "it rolled down a hill or something"....
I guess there's those that run away from fires, and there's those what run towards them.
