Ok, so maybe more than one smaller motor could be used together to run the shaft. I guess that opens yet another can of worms, though. Eventually there will be enough old Priuses and other hybrids and electric vehicles that one of us will transfer some of the power train to a PW. Doing it elegantly and leaving the PW intact will be the challenge rather than re-inventing the hybrid. I wouldn't mind winding up a motor from scratch, but any machined parts could make it too expensive. Copper wire itself is a serious expense these days. Quotes for motor winding copper wire is adjusted daily based on the price of copper.
